Rewarding Daily Life in a City where History and Industry Coexist
Baoding—a historical city
Mitsubishi Electric Switchgear Manufacturing Co., Ltd., (MESG) is located in Baoding, a city of about 12 million people in Hebei Province, China. The city’s history dates back more than 3,000 years. The name of the city consists of the Chinese characters for “guard” and “stabilize,” signifying that the city protects the capital of Beijing to the northeast and brings stability to the land. Baoding is famous as the birthplace of Liu Bei (also known as Xuande), a warlord who appears in the Records of the Three Kingdoms and the later historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. There is a stone monument to Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei in Zhuozhou, Baoding, where they famously took an oath of fraternal loyalty in a peach garden.

Baoding also has numerous historic remains. Just outside the city is the tomb of an emperor from the Western Han (Former Han) era. The Zhili provincial governor’s mansion, built during the Yuan Dynasty and one of China’s most important ancient government sites, is still standing. Nearby is the Ancient Lotus Pond Garden, one of China’s 10 most famous gardens. Together, these draw many tourists from around China. The pond garden is especially popular in the summer when its beautiful lotuses enter full bloom.

About my work
Currently, I work in production planning, production engineering and quality improvement in the department that makes core parts for switchgear. Every day I work on solving engineering and quality problems that occur during production processes. I conduct factor analysis and consider possible countermeasures in collaboration with my colleagues, suppliers and personnel at the Transmission & Distribution Systems Center (our mother factory). I received training at the Center and now apply the knowledge I learned there toward good manufacturing, and working with my colleagues to ensure better product quality for our customers.

Family life and hobbies
If the weather’s nice on my day off, my family and I sometimes pack a picnic with some of my home-cooked specialties and go to a local botanical garden. It’s a refreshing and wide-open place, great for taking walks or flying a kite with my daughter. After some exercise, it’s especially nice to relax and eat lunch in this natural setting. I also enjoy handicrafts. On special days I like to give small handmade items to my family members and coworkers to make them happy. Handicrafts help me relax as they require steady effort and persistence, which I think also helps me on the job.
