Capturing & Utilizing Factory CO2 Emissions
– Demonstration Testing Starts in Kyushu –

Mitsubishi Materials (MMC) has established mid-term targets for becoming carbon neutral by 2050, calling for a 17% reduction in group greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 over FY2013 levels in its efforts to contribute to the creation of a decarbonized society. It is developing carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology that will separate and recover CO2 emitted when cement is fired in high-temperature kilns and then use it to synthesize methane in a methanation process. The company will start a demonstration project at the Kyushu Plant’s Kurosaki Production Section in July 2021. The company is also working on the development of technology for reusing the methane produced as heat energy in the manufacture of cement.
