Animating the World
Developing state-of-the-art technology for a Mitsubishi company can occasion international living for researchers and for their family members, too. Witness the trans-Pacific life of Carly Cais.

Carly is a rare foreigner at the Tokyo school where she studies animation. Her self- portrait at right contrasts Western and Japanese fashions
Carly's father, Ted, is responsible for research and development at a large Mitsubishi Chemical subsidiary based in Virginia. Born in Czechoslovakia to Czech and British parents, he grew up in Australia and attended university there before moving to the United States. He holds several patents in regard to photoconductors for printers and copiers and, for what it's worth, is a world-class rock climber. Mitsubishi Chemical brought Ted and his family to Japan for three years in the early 1990s. Ted pursued advances in organic photoconductors at an R&D center in Yokohama. His wife, who is a high school Japanese teacher, took the opportunity to hone her skills. And Carly and her younger brother assimilated the language and culture of Japan while attending school. Now, Carly is back again. She developed a passionate interest in Japanese-style animation while studying film and Japanese at university in the United States. That prompted her to enroll in a two-year program at a professional school in Tokyo. There, she is mastering techniques that she hopes to put to work someday in her own animation studio.
