Kirin imported earthenware and other implements
from Egypt to ensure authenticity. |
Kirin
brought an Egyptian craftsperson to Japan to build a historically
authentic kiln at its big brewery in Yokohama. It has begun
using bread baked in the kiln to make beer like Egyptians
might have brewed in the Old Kingdom (2,7002,200 BCE).
The company makes the beer at another brewery, in Tochigi
Prefecture.
A Kirin spokesperson reports that the beer is
unlikely to appear in stores anytime soon. The brew tastes
very different from contemporary beers, partly because the
Egyptians didn't use hops.
So what's next for Kirin's archaeological brewing?
The Middle and New Kingdoms, according to the spokesperson.
Kirin researchers and Professor Yoshimura are peering at
still more wall paintings and other evidence to identify
ways that the brewer's art evolved through Egyptian history.
