On hand to help open the information center was
Mitsubishi Electric corporate senior vice president

The
80th anniversary of Mitsubishi Electric's worldwide philanthropy
has occasioned a grant to China's western province of Qinghai.
That province borders Xinjiang, Gansu, Sichuan and Tibet.
It has the fourth-largest area (720,000 sq. km.) and the
third-smallest population (about 5 million) among China's
provinces.
Mitsubishi Electric established an economic-promotion
information center in Qinghai in July in cooperation with
local government agencies. Economic development has proceeded
more slowly in China's western provinces than in the eastern
seaboard provinces, and the government is eager to narrow
the gap.
A spokesperson for Mitsubishi Electric characterizes
the center as a clearinghouse for entrepreneurial ideas
and business initiatives. The Chinese authorities regard
the center as a model for development initiatives.
Mitsubishi Electric prefaced the 70th anniversary
of its global philanthropy with similar grants in 1991.
Those grants established MEAF, a matching gift and grant
program for disabled persons in the United States, and METF,
a scholarship education program for aspiring engineers in
Thailand. |
