western United States is a natural habitat for the Mitsubishi
companies. Hawaii and California have long been favorite
destinations among Japanese for travel and for study,
and the western United States is familiar terrain to countless
Japanese. Here, we present a sampling to indicate the
vast scope of the Mitsubishi companies' operations "out
west."

A
Texas-based joint venture between Mitsubishi
Heavy Industries and Caterpillar
manufactures forklifts (photo). A subsidiary of Mitsubishi
Heavy Industries in Texas deals in used forklifts, and one in
Saipan provides operational and maintenance services for diesel
generating equipment.

Arizona
is the site of a Mitsubishi Gas
Chemical plant that produces ultrapure
hydrogen peroxide for cleaning semiconductor devices and for
other applications. Nippon Oil
markets ship and aircraft fuel and lubricating oil through a
California sales office.

Mitsubishi
Logistics operates a large warehouse
and shipping center in California. It supplements it logistics
support for customers with product reworking services for manufacturers
(photo). NYK Line,
meanwhile, is a leading source of marine and overland transport
services at West Coast ports and all across the United States. |

Mitsubishi
Rayon produces coating resins (left), adhesives (below),
and carbon fiber at three plants in western states. Mitsubishi
Motors, meanwhile, maintains its North American headquarters
in California.

Meiji
Yasuda Life--the result of the January
1 merger of Meiji Life and Yasuda Life--has the longest-standing
ownership of any Japanese life insurer in a U.S. operation.
That operation is Honolulu-based Pacific Guardian Life Insurance
Company, in which Meiji Life invested in 1976. |

Nikon
imports and markets semiconductor manufacturing equipment at
a California-based subsidiary. Another Nikon subsidiary in the
Golden State conducts important research and development in
that product sector.

of Tokyo-Mitsubishi subsidiary Union
Bank of California has 282 branches in California, Oregon, and
Washington. Mitsubishi Corporation
maintains five offices on the West Coast and one in Texas to
support its value-creating activity in trade and investment.
Tokio Marine
is active "out west," too, through operations in California
and Hawaii. Another Mitsubishi financial services company, DC
Card, has an office in Los Angeles.

Several
subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Materials
have marketing operations in the western United States. One
of them, Mitsubishi Cement, operates a large cement plant in
California.
