The Mitsubishi Motors Motor
Sports Team sealed a record fourth consecutive victory (and
ninth total) for Mitsubishi Motors Corporation on January
18 with a 1-2-5 finish of the 2004 Telefónica Dakar
Rally. Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret were
the respective driver and co-driver of the winning Mitsubishi
Pajero/Montero Evolution. It was Cottret's first win,
and Peterhansel, who has won previously on a motorbike,
became only the second driver in the history of the race
to win on both two wheels and four. The race started on
New Year's Day at Clermont-Ferrand in central France
and finished in Dakar, Senegal, after two and a half weeks
of flat-out racing across two continents, much of it without
roads. In a remarkable showing of consistency, reliability
and flawless team support, the pair won only two of the
individual stages, but was never lower than second in the
overall standings from start to finish.
