Working
for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Mexico
since 1991 has been a rich experience, with
power plant construction, after-sale service
and preparation of bids, as well as assisting
the start of awarded projects, but most interesting
has been getting to know many persons from
different parts of Japan and other countries.
So, it is my pleasure to turn it around and
help Monitor readers to get to know our home
country of Mexico.
Many people know the famous
places in Mexico, such as Cancun or Acapulco,
but there is much more to this country than
resorts. Mexico is a big country located south
of the U.S.A. Its history is very long, since
it was the birthplace of several American
cultures, the most famous being the Maya and
Aztec. Then, we spent three centuries as a
colony, until winning independence from Spain.
Mexico City, the capital,
is actually the largest city in the world,
with more than 20 million inhabitants. It
is a cosmopolitan city in which you can find
everything, from historical places that date
to the foundation of the city by the Aztecs,
to almost any kind of food.
For a truly good view of
Mexico City, you must visit the Latin American
Tower, which is located downtown and was for
many years the tallest building in Mexico
and Latin America. It was designed and constructed
by Mexican engineers in the 1950s, and it
is so safe that even in the earthquake of
1985, which was above 8 on the Richter scale,
this building did not suffer any damage.
Of course there are
many other interesting buildings, but from
my personal point of view, I think that this
building represents the high quality and capacity
of the Mexican engineers and constructors.
