| EXPO 2005 Aichi is now well under
way near Nagoya in central Japan. It has been notable for
being the first World Exposition in the 21st century and
the first to have the environment as its main theme. To
rediscover paths lost when mankind rushed to industrialization,
the Expo has been exploring the “Wisdom of Nature,”
seeking through technology to bring the world together in
a green and efficient modern economy based on balance and
harmony.
In the first four months, more than 10 million
visitors have toured the Expo to experience advanced technology
and the environment coexisting in a park-like setting. Every
corner is filled with new solutions and improved alternatives,
like a maglev commuter train and biomass-derived energy
generation. This is also the first Expo to encourage citizen
participation. At the Civic Pavilion, people and groups
from around the world tackle together the challenging issues
confronting global society. The site, which covers 173 hectares,
hosts over 100 pavilions from 10 companies, 120 countries
and numerous NGOs and other organizations, including the
Mitsubishi Pavilion@Earth. Rather than focusing on economic
development, as at previous world expos, these pavilions
provide visitors with new insights into environmental problems
and their solutions.
