As one of the 50 states that comprise the United States of America, Pennsylvania is a land of great diversity. From the bright lights of the big cities, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, to the gently rolling farmlands of the central region, one can see and feel the variety that Pennsylvania has to offer.
Pennsylvania was first settled in 1643 as one of the original British colonies. Philadelphia, once the capital of the United States, is the "birthplace of America" and home to the Liberty Bell. For much of its history, Pennsylvania was known for coal mining and dairy farming. This abundance of coal led to the rise of the steelmaking industry, but there are still more than 55,000 farms on over 9 million acres of land. In fact, the Hershey Chocolate Company was founded in central Pennsylvania partly because of the abundant supply of milk to use in the manufacture of chocolate. Recent history has seen the growth of new industries, like biosciences, take on a prominent role in the economy of the area.
The town of Thorndale is home to the AGC Chemicals Americas, Inc. plant, where I work. Thorndale is located in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania and is about a 45-minute drive from the 5th largest city in the United States—Philadelphia. Pennsylvania is part of the middle Atlantic region of the United States, near the east coast. As such, our climate is one of snowy winters and hot summers. Thorndale is also within a two-hour drive of two of the most prominent cities in the United States (Washington, DC and New York City).
