In the United States, Mitsubishi Corporation is partnering with the University of California, Santa Cruz in the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge at Midway Island and on the adjacent reefs of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The study in the Republic of Seychelles, a nation of islands in the Indian Ocean, will focus on the reef-associated habitats of the Silhouette Marine National Park. There, the company will work in partnership with the Earthwatch Institute (Europe), the Coral Reef Research Unit and Nature Protection Trust of Seychelles on the study into this fragile and rich ecosystem.
In addition to the field trips to gather valuable data, Mitsubishi Corporation will also broadly promote the utilization of the research around the world. In March 2006, it organized a symposium, open to the public, at which Professor Suzuki spoke about the research conducted to date on the Okinawan project.
