Nagasaki’s
new Megami Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge on Japan’s
southern island of Kyushu, is a remarkable feat of engineering,
and now paint manufacturer Dai
Nippon Toryo is giving it a coat of paint to match.
As the bridge measures 880 meters in length and 170 meters in height,
it is heavily exposed to the elements. To protect it from winds,
rain, sun and corrosive seawater, Dai Nippon Toryo is using super-durable,
high-performance coatings. The first layer consists of a thick film
of anti-corrosive, inorganic zinc-rich Zettar OL-HB, which is suitable
for coating steel structures.
The second layer is epoxy resin paint, which prevents ultraviolet
rays from causing oxidation or chalking. Finally, the top coat consists
of highly durable fluoropolymer resin paint, which is long-lasting
as well as easy to apply and maintain. To enhance safety during
bridge inspections, the company is painting the insides of girders
and beams with brightly colored modified epoxy resin.
Located on the south side of Nagasaki City, the Megami Bridge, affectionately
known as Venus’ Wing, will provide relief to the chronic traffic
congestion in the city by linking its southern and western parts.
Also, the bridge is intended to revitalize industry and culture
in the whole region by strengthening the link between the city and
the port facilities. Illuminated in the evenings, the bridge has
become a landmark of Nagasaki Port and a new symbol of Nagasaki
City tourism.
