President Arroyo
of the Philippines has made education her administration’s
top priority. Starting in 2006, Mitsubishi Corporation
began participating in the Classroom, Galing sa Mamamayang
Pilipino Abroad (CGMA) project, donating buildings to be used
as public elementary and junior high schools. To date, the
project has resulted in the construction of approximately
490 classrooms. Mitsubishi Corporation will donate 20 classrooms
over the next three years. Recently, two schools were selected
to receive classrooms donated in fiscal 2006, and construction
began on February 6, 2007.
According to teachers
at the two schools, even when the children are able to attend
school, there is insufficient classroom space. Most rural
elementary schools consist of single-story buildings, each
containing two classrooms packed with 40-50 children. The
two schools chosen to receive classrooms donated by Mitsubishi
Corporation are located near fishing villages on the island
of Cebu. A total of six classrooms will be donated. |

 |
|
| This
project will continue for another two years. In addition to the
donation of classrooms, staff in the Manila Branch will consider
other ways to become involved in the projects, for instance through
voluntary donations of classroom accessories such as blackboards,
educational posters, maps and globes. |

With the aging of
Japan’s population, cognitive impairment has become
a significant social problem. Formerly called “dementia,”
it is a decline in memory and other intellectual functions
caused by cerebrovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease
or other conditions. Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking
(MUTB) is helping customers and their families to cope by
becoming the first major financial institution to back a campaign
by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to train a million
people as supporters for cognitive impairment sufferers. MUTB
is providing training courses at all of its offices for staff
members who volunteer to participate in the Ministry’s
campaign.
The first training course
was held in November 2006 at the MUTB headquarters in Tokyo.
A total of 270 head office staff and Tokyo region staff participated.
A second |
|
training program
in December assured that every office now has staff trained in cognitive
impairment support. MUTB plans to hold training courses at all of
its offices in the future.
By helping to provide training
in cognitive impairment support and helping to educate the public,
MUTB is working in partnership with customers and communities to
build a sustainable society. |

Mitsubishi
Fuso Truck & Bus Corp. (MFTBC) is once again sponsoring
the Urawa Red Diamonds (the Urawa Reds) Japanese professional soccer
team in the 2007 J. League season.
MFTBC sponsored the J. League
First Division team in 2004 and 2006. For the 2007 season, its logo
will appear on the team’s uniform shorts, as well as on stadium
billboards, stadium TV screens, posters and flyers at both of the
team’s home grounds (Saitama Stadium 2002 and Urawa Komaba
Stadium), and also on team practice gear. |

Astute readers earn bonus points for deducing a connection
between the team and Mitsubishi—Red Diamonds,
get it? Before the J. League was founded in 1992, Urawa
was a company team of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and
Mitsubishi Motors has also long sponsored them as a
pro team. In the 2006 season, when the MFTBC logo appeared
on the backs of the team’s uniforms, the Urawa
Reds became the top soccer team in Japan by winning
both the J. League Cup and the all-Japan Emperor’s
Cup. MFTBC hopes that its continuing support of one
of the most popular soccer clubs in the J. League will
help the team to further assert its dominance in the
current season. |
