Every year, Kirin and its huge variety of beverages come to the rescue of those suffering in the sweltering Japanese summer. What few consider, however, is the containers that these refreshments arrive in. They are and will continue to be the results of solid technical achievements.
The commonly used plastic PET bottle, while convenient, has several issues Kirin is trying to solve. One major issue is the relatively short shelf life of these bottles when they contain certain sensitive* beverages.
However, by using DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) to coat the inside of a PET bottle, Kirin has created a new type of container. This coating can drastically restrict the passage of gas molecules and the absorption of ingredients into the PET material, greatly extending product shelf life.
Furthermore, Kirin is developing new technology
to solve another issue, the short lifespan of refillable PET bottles. These bottles are usually washed with alkaline solutions, which can seriously damage their surface and shorten their lifespan. Kirin’s method uses new acid cleanser types and microbubbles, causing far less damage.
With cutting-edge weight reduction technology and a near 100% collection rate of used refillable bottles, the company is now striving to create even more innovative and attractive packaging technologies. Kirin will continue making its packaging lighter, stronger and more environment-friendly.

* Sensitive beverages are drinks such as beer or fruit juice that gradually lose their flavor when exposed to oxygen and other external factors.
