● Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, is the capital of the state of West Bengal in India. Situated on the bank of Hooghly River, it is one of India’s major metropolises. The city was the country’s capital during the major part of British rule, until 1912 when Delhi took on this role.
  ● Kolkata, called the “City of Palaces” due to its large buildings from the British period, has a history of more than 300 years. The population is mostly Bengali, but there are also many other ethnic groups, making the city very cosmopolitan. The main languages are Bengali, English and Hindi.
The impressive Victoria Memorial in Kolkata
  ● Kolkata boasts a range of famous names. Swami Vivekananda made India’s spirituality and tolerance known to the world when India was under British rule. Rabindranath Tagore, the first Nobel laureate and India’s greatest literary figure, is acclaimed worldwide and the only person in the world to have had two songs adopted as national anthems by two countries—India and Bangladesh. The Oscar-winning film director Satyajit Ray also hails from this city, and Amartya Sen, the noted economist and Nobel laureate, taught economics here. Kolkata was also blessed with the compassionate work for the needy by Mother Teresa, another Nobel Prize winner. Here, she established Missionaries of Charity, a charity that now has branches worldwide.
  ● Kolkata also boasts the Victoria Memorial, a beautiful marble structure inspired by the Taj Mahal, and the Howrah Bridge, the world’s busiest, longest single-span, and third longest cantilever bridge. The city’s tramways are also a major attraction.
