In recent years, the rapidly growing
Islamic finance industry has attracted the attention of financial groups from
outside of the Muslim world.
In 2001, Tokio Marine & Nichido
Fire Insurance (of the Millea Group) successfully entered this field
by launching a Takaful (generally translated as “Islamic insurance”)
scheme in Saudi Arabia. Recognizing the great business opportunities, Millea Group
then opened a Takaful branch in Indonesia and a Retakaful subsidiary in Singapore
in 2004.
In 2006, the Group established a joint Takaful venture in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,
together with the Hong Leong Group Malaysia. In September 2007, the new venture,
Hong Leong Tokio Marine Takaful Berhad (HLTMT), launched its first Capital Protection
Investment-Linked (CPIL) scheme in collaboration with Citibank. |

Compliant
with Shariah, Islamic law, and available nationwide, this three-year
investment fund protects investor contributions held until maturity. Returns at
maturity are benchmarked against property-related indices and commodities such
as oil, copper and zinc.
In the first 45-day offering, sales reached
MYR100 million (about US$30 million), attracting both Muslims and non-Muslims
as a safe and ethical investment alternative.
HLTMT will soon launch several CPIL varieties. |

In today’s world, large-scale
metal structures are all around us. But, keeping them in tip-top shape sometimes
requires innovative solutions. Though seemingly hard and resilient, metal can
be severely weakened by a number of factors, particularly if directly exposed to the elements—and, deceptively,
this deterioration may not always be visible to the naked eye.
A recent bridge collapse in the U.S. prompted
Dai Nippon Toryo to devlop a way of “seeing through“
paint coatings and determine the severity of the deterioration underneath. As
the FS3 System, as the new method is called, is intended for on-site use, care
was taken to make it as easy as possible to operate in the field. For instance,
to reduce weight, aluminum was used in the prototype.
Until now, deterioration has been diagnosed
largely through visual inspections. The FS3 System, |

however, offers a simple way of pinpointing
corrosion thanks to an advanced sub-coating metal corrosion diagnosis system and
advanced digital image processing.
Based on the extent of deterioration and the anticipated economic life of the
structure, the system also proposes a solution that best meets the needs of the
customer. Initially, Dai Nipon Toryo plans to use the new method to carry out
emergency inspections of structures in Japan, and to respond steadily to anticipated
growth in maintenance and repair demand. |

Mitsubishi Logistics
Opens Liaison Office in New Delhi
In October 2007, Mitsubishi Logistics opened a new liaison office in New Delhi,
India.
Attracted by its vast domestic markets and rapid economic growth, Japanese manufacturers
in the automobile sector and other industries are expanding into India at
an ever-higher pace. Some have even established export production bases. These
factors are generating enormous demand for logistics services.
Thanks to the establishent of its new liaison office, Mitsubishi Logistics will
be able to offer optimized solutions to meet the expanding demand for logistics
services through cooperative relationships with partner companies throughout India.
The company is also preparing for the future establishment of a local sales base.

Mitsubishi Electric’s
IC Tags Monitor Document Removal
Mitsubishi Electric has supplied one of the most extensive security systems
in Japan to the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ. A new document removal monitoring
and stocktaking system, based on tiny IC tag stickers, will be used by the bank’s
system department. The new system became operational on October 29, 2007.
The bank needs to manage hundreds of thousands of documents, and monitoring of unauthorized
removal of documents is a major responsibility. If a document is removed from
its authorized area of use, the attached IC tag will be detected at a gate. An
alarm will sound as security cameras record the event. |

Mitsubishi Heavy
Industries Establises a U.K. Subsidiary
In October 2007, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) established a U.K.
subsidiary in London to attract orders in Europe for its power generation systems,
including gas turbine plants. Demand for power generation equipment is expected to
expand significantly in the EU. The new U.K. base enables MHI to respond to this
demand through marketing activities tailored to the European market as well as
collaboration with European companies.
The new company, Mitsubishi Power Systems
Europe, Ltd. (MPSE), will not only take orders for thermal power generation plants;
it will also provide after-sales services and work to expand MHI’s renewable
energy business, which includes wind turbines and photovoltaic systems. In the
future, MPSE will also work to expand into the Middle East and Russia. |
