| Solar power provides a means
of producing electricity that emits almost no CO2. In light of this, solar power
is now garnering widespread attention as a clean form of renewable energy. In
Japan, the U.S. and across Europe, governments are taking steps to promote renewable
energies as part of efforts to counter global warming, so the future of solar
power is likely to remain bright for many years to come. |

Mitsubishi Electric has been
developing its photovoltaic (PV), or solar power business for 35 years. The company
has made great strides in the area of PV, distinguishing itself as the only player
in the industry to have developed and manufactured PV cells, modules and inverters.
Mitsubishi Electric also continues to outshine its competitors in the area of
research and development. PV cells developed by Mitsubishi Electric are highly
efficient at converting sunlight into energy; in fact, Mitsubishi Electric recently
achieved the world’s highest photoelectric conversion efficiency (18.9%)
using a multi-crystalline silicon PV cell. The company has also developed PV
inverters for converting DC to AC that boast the highest conversion efficiency
in Japan of 97.5%.
In October 2008, Mitsubishi
Electric provided the California-based Bolthouse Farms with 10,300 solar power
modules. This 1.9-megawatt solar power system covers unused ground on the agricultural
firm's carrot farm and provides nearly 80 percent of the electricity used at
this farm. This is only one example of the many large-scale solar power projects
that Mitsubishi Electric has been involved in recently in the U.S. These plants
are mostly funded by leveraging federal tax credits and other incentives, which
makes it easier for businesses to deploy solar power systems.

With the global PV market gaining greater momentum with the introduction of
government environmental initiatives, such as within the new stimulus plan and
enhancements in subsidies in the U.S., Mitsubishi Electric anticipates continued
strong demand for solar power systems in the years ahead.
