| When earthquakes or other disasters
strike, broken glass can cause injures and also render evacuation centers unusable. Asahi Glass (AGC) has tackled this problem by developing laminated safety glass
that does not shatter into little pieces when broken. In 2005, the company also
began donating safety glass to schools across Japan. In September 2009, Taketoyo
Elementary School in Aichi Prefecture became the 21st recipient of safety glass
under this program. The school is located in a part of the country that is expected
to have a major earthquake in the near future. As schools like this one commonly
serve as evacuation centers in times of emergency, safety glass from AGC can
help protect students and evacuees alike from glass-related injuries. |

A massive earthquake shook China’s
Sichuan Province on May 12, 2008. NYK quickly responded by pledging support for
reconstruction efforts being organized by Plan, which is one of the world’s
oldest and largest children’s development organizations. The NYK Group’s
donation of 10 million yen (approx. $107,800) was subsequently used to rebuild
Yuanshan Primary School, which had been devastated by the earthquake. A ceremony
to celebrate the completion of the new school was held on September 4, 2009.
NYK employees in China also did their part to help the new school get off to
a strong start by donating books and making cash contributions, which were used
to purchase books, sports equipment and other school supplies.
