Safety Glass to the Rescue!
When earthquakes or other disasters strike, broken glass can cause injures and also render evacuation centers unusable. Asahi Glass (AGC) has tackled this problem by developing laminated safety glass that does not shatter into little pieces when broken. In 2005, the company also began donating safety glass to schools across Japan. In September 2009, Taketoyo Elementary School in Aichi Prefecture became the 21st recipient of safety glass under this program. The school is located in a part of the country that is expected to have a major earthquake in the near future. As schools like this one commonly serve as evacuation centers in times of emergency, safety glass from AGC can help protect students and evacuees alike from glass-related injuries.

Elevating Efforts to Counter Global Warming with Carbon Offset Leases
Mitsubishi UFJ Lease & Finance (MUL) and Nichiyu MHI Forklift Co.,Ltd., an affiliate of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), have joined forces to offer the first ever carbon offset leases for forklifts. Under this program, carbon credits are contributed to the Japanese government when customers enter into MHI and Nichiyu forklift lease contracts with MUL. Carbon credits equal to one ton of carbon emission are contributed for every forklift lease contract. Customers that initiate new leases through March 2010 will not be charged any extra cost for the service. Through this new service, customers of Nichiyu MHI Forklift can use quality leased forklifts while also making contributions to society.

Sowing the Seeds of Sustainable Development One Mind at a Time
The United Nations has declared 2005-2014 to be the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in light of the essential role that education plays in promoting the future development of sustainable societies. In this spirit, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ has joined with the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan to launch a program to support “Education for Sustainable Development” (ESD) at UNESCO Associated Schools across the country. The program will
provide funding to cover the costs of educational materials incurred by schools that organize classes on ESD. In this way, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ is striving to sow the seeds of a sustainable future, one mind at a time.

Primary School in China Makes a New Start
A massive earthquake shook China’s Sichuan Province on May 12, 2008. NYK quickly responded by pledging support for reconstruction efforts being organized by Plan, which is one of the world’s oldest and largest children’s development organizations. The NYK Group’s donation of 10 million yen (approx. $107,800) was subsequently used to rebuild Yuanshan Primary School, which had been devastated by the earthquake. A ceremony to celebrate the completion of the new school was held on September 4, 2009. NYK employees in China also did their part to help the new school get off to a strong start by donating books and making cash contributions, which were used to purchase books, sports equipment and other school supplies.
