On August 1, 2008, the Global Hybrid
Center (GHC) was opened on the Kawasaki compound of Mitsubishi
Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) in Japan. After marking its first anniversary last summer,
the GHC has been stepping up efforts to promote hybrid development on a global
scale by leveraging the know-how and experience amassed by MFTBC and Daimler
Trucks’ other brands. These activities are part of Daimler’s “Shaping
Future Transportation” initiative, which aims to redouble efforts to achieve
a major reduction in the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of commercial
vehicles.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are now garnering
widespread attention as concerns about global warming continue to grow. In order
to pave the way for increased EV usage, Nippon Oil is proceeding to install quick
charging facilities at its ENEOS service stations, beginning with 22 locations
in various cities across Japan. Through March 2010, customers may use these self-service
facilities to charge their EVs at no charge. Solar panels are also being installed
at many of these locations; at one service station, solar panels are already
generating electricity that is directly used to charge EVs. The combination of
EVs and solar power is hard to beat when seeking to curb automobile-related emissions.
