NYK’s Auriga
Leader is the world’s first ship to be equipped with a full-scale, on-deck
solar power system. NYK collaborated with fellow Mitsubishi Company Nippon Oil on the system’s development. With a maximum output
of 40 kilowatts, the system generates electricity not only for the
crew’s living quarters but also provides power for engine control.
NYK is conducting trials to test the system’s capacity for also
supplying a portion of the power required for ship propulsion.

in fuel oil consumption while also curbing CO2 emissions. NYK will
continue to conduct field experiments in an effort to further enhance
the stability of the power supply, even while at sea. In the future,
the company aims to develop a commercially viable system that utilizes
solar energy for ship propulsion. |
