MUTB Breaks New Ground in the Area of Environmental Finance
In Japan, the Ministry of the Environment has established an interest-rate subsidy program to make interest-free loans available for companies that are seeking to implement projects to reduce CO2 emissions as part of efforts to achieve emission reduction targets stipulated under the Kyoto Protocol. Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking (MUTB) has broken new ground as trust and banking company by utilizing this subsidy program to implement its first “environmental finance? initiatives through projects involving Shimizu Corporation and AEON MALL Co., Ltd. MUTB will continue to support companies with efforts to promote countermeasures to global warming by offering various types of environmental finance, including programs like this one, which utilizes government subsidies, as well as the company’s own financial products.

Cruise Ship Serves as Unigue Classroom   There are few opportunities for people to learn about vessels, even though the shipping industry is responsible for transporting much of what we use in our daily lives. In light of this, NYK seeks to create opportunities for people to gain firsthand knowledge about vessels so they can better appreciate the role that the shipping industry plays in our lives. As part of these efforts, students studying at a Japanese school in Turkey were welcomed aboard Asuka II

this May when Asuka II arrived at the port city of Istanbul during a round-the-world cruise. A total of 65 students boarded the cruise ship, which is operated by NYK subsidiary, NYK Cruises Co. Ltd., to learn about the vessel and the duties of its seafarers.

Yellow Badges for Safety
All across Japan, first-year elementary school students can be seen wearing yellow badges as they commute to school. These badges are distributed as part of a road safety campaign that dates back more than four decades. On March 30, Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance, along with Mizuho Financial Group, Inc., Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. and The Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company, Limited, joined with the Japanese Traffic Safety Association, the National Police Agency and other official organizations to hold a ceremony commemorating the presentation of yellow badges for the new academic year. By raising road safety awareness among children, parents and drivers, the program aims to prevent traffic accidents involving children. More than 56 million badges have been distributed throughout the program’s 46-year history, and some families now have two generations of badge wearers.

A Gateway to a Career in Art
Since being launched by Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) in June 2008, the Mitsubishi Corporation Art Gate Program (MCAGP) has continued to provide opportunities for talented young artists to pursue their dreams. Through the program, MC holds open calls for the submission of art and then selects and purchases about 200 works each year. The art works are sold at charity auctions after being exhibited inside MC’s head office and at other locations. A number of MCAGP participants have gone on to further advance their careers as professionals by holding private exhibitions or winning art awards. Through the MCAGP, MC will continue to provide a gateway for young people seeking the path to careers as professional artists.
