JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation, a petroleum refining and marketing subsidiary of JX Holdings, Inc., and Mitsubishi Corporation have been working with Russian oil major JSC Gazprom Neft (GN) to recover and utilize flare gas from the Yety Purovskoe
Oilfield (Yamal Nenets district, Russian Federation). On July 23, 2010 this project was granted formal approval by the Russian government as the country’s first Joint Implementation (JI) Project.
      A JI Project is an emission reduction scheme conceived under the Kyoto Protocol as a collaborative means by developed countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. When two countries jointly implement an emissions reduction project in one of their countries, Emission Reduction Units equivalent to the amount of reduced emissions are awarded by the host country.

NYK has donated 2,400 1.5-liter bottles of drinking water to the Big Issue Japan Foundation¹ through the Japan Philanthropic Association².
       NYK stocks drinking water and food at company headquarters as part of its disaster preparedness. After internal discussions on how to make best use of these stocks at their scheduled replacement, the company decided to donate the water to the Big Issue Japan Foundation.
      The foundation, working with citizens and companies, offers programs to help homeless people help themselves. The water was distributed to homeless people selling The Big Issue magazine outdoors in the summer heat to help prevent heat stroke.
      The NYK Group continues to work positively as a good corporate citizen on activities that contribute to our society.

The Nikon CSR¹ REPORT 2009 issued by Nikon Corporation has been awarded Notable Communication on Progress (Notable COP) status by the UN Global Compact for the second consecutive year.
      First introduced by the UN in 2000, the UN Global Compact program seeks participating companies and organizations to support and voluntarily align their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. Nikon has participated in the program since July, 2007.
       Participating companies and organizations are required to annually submit a Communication on Progress (COP) which is an annual report describing efforts to adhere to and to attain the Ten Principles.Those judged as outstanding are awarded Notable COP status.

Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance became carbon neutral¹ in its domestic business operations in fiscal 2009. The company’s carbon-neutral initiative of planting mangroves to absorb and stabilize CO2 is a spearheading endeavor not only in Japan but also across the world. The Tokio Marine & Nichido Group is seeking to achieve carbon neutral status in its operations worldwide by the end of fiscal 2011.
      Since the start of the mangrove planting project in 1999 the company has planted over 6,293 hectares of mangrove plants in South East Asia, India and Fiji. Mangroves help prevent or ease global warming by absorbing and stabilizing CO2 and also serve as a buffer for tsunamis.
Note 1 : Being carbon neutral refers to achieving net zero carbon emissions by balancing a measured amount of carbon released from business activities with an equivalent amount sequestered or offset by planting mangroves, using renewable energy sources, carbon credits and other carbon-absorbing or carbon-reducing activities.
