| Ryoshoku, a leading wholesale foodstuff distributor in Japan, set up a new MoEL Development Team in its Processed Foods Merchandising Dept in April 2009. The “Merchandising of Ecological Lifestyle” team is committed to reducing food waste in order to maximize the effective use of food resources. |
The team is currently active in two main areas. First, it conducts outlet sales of food products which, while presenting no problems in terms of quality, have become difficult to sell through normal retail channels due to distribution regulations and other reasons. The team also organizes the donation to welfare and other institutions of food samples left over at company tasting fairs or withdrawn from its in-house stock of emergency provisions but which still have a valid “use by date”.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) and the government of Thailand have agreed to start joint study for fleet testing of electric vehicles (EV) in that country. Working with its local producer and distributor Mitsubishi Motors Thailand, MMC will start laying the path for the launch of the i-MiEV new-generation EV on the Thai market.
For its part, the Thai government will move forward with its Electric Vehicle Project, creating an integrated organization with related ministries and government agencies under the direction of the Ministry of Industry. |
| |
The agreement means the Thai Ministry of Industry will use the i-MiEV in conducting feasibility studies directed toward popularizing the use of EVs in Thailand. These studies will cover such areas as consumer acceptance and marketability of EVs, user support systems and the establishment of the necessary infrastructure for charging the batteries used to power EVs. |

| As part of its activities under the umbrella of the JPF (Japan Platform) Joint Aid Project, the NYK group shipped 5,000 pairs of sandals to children living in the disaster zone left by the Haiti earthquake in January 2010. The sandals which were made from recycled tires, were dontated by Taiya-kan, a retail tire sales subsidiary of Bridgestone Corporation. NYK provided free ocean transport from Tokyo to Rio Haina in the Dominican Republic. The sandals, sporting designs created by children in Japan, were distributed in October last year by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency Japan to children living in earthquake camps in Port-au-Prince. Many messages of gratitude have since been received from the children. |

| In the first venture of its type in Japan, Mitsubishi Auto Leasing Corporation, Mitsubishi UFJ Lease & Finance Company and Yamatake Corporation have started to create emission credits for reductions in CO2 emissions realized by electric vehicles (EVs). |
Mitsubishi Auto Leasing Corporation opened the EV Community “Ecoriha¹” for customers who utilize EV lease. The Ecoriha project provides a framework through which reductions in CO2 emissions stemming from EV use can be monitored and quantified. This enables small emission reductions to be used in the creation of emission credits. The earnings from emission credit sales are used to fund the environmental activities of participating companies and to promote the more widespread use of EVs on Japanese roads. |
