Green Diamonds highlights the ongoing efforts of Mitsubishi companies to foster a greener, more sustainable planet and brighter, more vibrant communities through wide-ranging environmental and social initiatives.

Mitsubishi Chemical and Mitsubishi Plastics in April 2011 launched the ALPOLIC®/gioa® range of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) that combine thin film solar cells with ALPOLIC aluminum composite panels. The BIPVs are formed by laminating amorphous silicon thin film solar cells onto ALPOLIC building panels. Solar cell modules for buildings have traditionally been mounted on flat roof tops and other horizontal surfaces but the ALPOLIC

panels allow ALPOLIC/gioa BIPVs to be installed on most parts of the building envelope, including walls and other vertical surfaces. This offers cost advantages over the use of non-integrated systems in new buildings by reducing the amount spent on building materials and labor.

In 2008 IT Frontier Corporation started a program in which employees give up their time to make picture books for children in Asia. The voluntary program runs all year round at the company’s branch offices and stores as well as at head office and new employees participate as part of their CSR training. The books are donated to schools in Asian
countries by a nonprofit organization. The company also runs a Recycle Book Aid program in which money raised from recycled books is donated to help finance educational programs for children in Asia.

Woodlands play a vital role in conserving biodiversity, in preventing natural disasters and especially in protecting water quality. Since 1999, Kirin Brewery, a group company of Kirin Holdings has been working with local communities to conserve woodlands close to the company’s breweries and which provide the water used to make beer. The company implemented forestry programs which saw 2,000 people planting new trees and clearing undergrowth in 15 woodland

water areas throughout Japan in 2010.
Kirin’s “Protecting Water’s Blessings” movement comprises three programs, “Woodlands Water,” “Voluntary Conservation of the Environment” and “Cooperative Conservation of the Local Environment.” In this the International Year of Forests, Kirin will continue its commitment to these activities as well as further promoting communication with local communities.

reconditioned bicycles make a significant contribution to the welfare of those living in rural communities as they provide the only means of transport that allows midwives, health workers and doctors to do their rounds. Referred to as “life-saving transportation” or “gifts from God,” the bicycles have come to symbolize activities aimed at protecting the health and lives of community residents.
