The Good Design Award, organized by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion is Japan’s only comprehensive program for the evaluation and encouragement of design. This award has been given to outstanding designs for more than 50 years in the pursuit of industrial development and a rich daily life. Today, many companies and designers from Japan and neighboring countries participate in the competition. A total of 3,162 entries were submitted in 2011, and many of the designs from Mitsubishi Companies were highly rated and presented with awards recognizing their contemporary relevance or their longselling excellence. We will introduce just a few of the Good Design Award winners here.

Mitsubishi Electric - Good Design Award

The eX series is a 2-dimension laser processing machine used for cutting and processing steel. It significantly simplifies the setup and calibration work that required much effort and experience in the past, allowing anybody to carry out laser processing with ease. In addition to simplifying the preparatory procedure, the eX series reduces processing time by some 30 percent over the company’s previous model and improves total productivity by up to 40 percent. It also realizes a dramatic improvement in environmental performance by reducing standby mode power consumption by up to 90 percent. The full-cover external design improves safety while also maximizing the glazing area to facilitate monitoring of the cutting process.

Launched in 1961, the SMZ has offered stereoscopic observation capability. Keywords driving the development of the SMZ were “high performance, compact and lightweight, and affordability.” Today the SMZ is used in a wide range of fields including processing and inspection procedures in the manufacturing industry, in biomedical research and in school classrooms. The outstanding optical performance, solid construction and ease of use which characterize the SMZ have made this entry-level stereomicroscope an extremely long seller over the 50 years since its market introduction.

Mitsubishi Jisho Residence & MEC eco LIFE - Good Design Award

This condominium incorporates a wide range of CO2-reduction technologies. The external wall insulation, solar-heated hot water and underfloor chamber airconditioning systems are expected to reduce CO2 emissions for the building as a whole by 13.3 tons annually and realize significant reductions in energy consumption for each unit. Parkhouse Kichijoji Oikos has been recognized as an environmentally responsible project under a program run by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to promote reduction in CO2 emissions associated with residential and other buildings. The condominium includes a number of features designed to encourage a sense of community among residents, including the continuation of common use areas into individual unit living space.

Diarence Den En Chofu is a 220-room bachelor dormitory planned for and built in a quiet and scenic residential area. The building incorporates many environmental technologies. These include the energyand resource-saving Eco Sky Roof system which uses photovoltaic and solar heating panels to supply electricity and hot water. The dormitory is also distinguished by its green roof and living wall technology which uses plants to enhance the energy and thermal insulation efficiency of the building. The Diarence Den En Chofu dormitory represents an outstanding example of the way in which buildings can aesthetically coexist with green tracts of land, achieve harmony with the surrounding environment and incorporate energy-saving measures.

Thermomild is a radiating type of airconditioning unit commonly used in residential applications. Characteristic features include low cost, excellent durability, ease of maintenance and the ability to be connected to open loop circulation underfloor heating.
    This heating & cooling unit has aluminum sandwich panels. The core contains cross-linked polyethylene pipes through which the hot or cold water flows. Another feature of the Thermomild radiation panel is that it can also serve as a handy room divider.
