On October 1, the JR Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, reopened on a fully operational basis after extensive refurbishing work to restore it to its original appearance when it was built some 100 years ago. The renovation work was completed and the restored areas largely reopened on June 3, but full operations had to wait until the beginning of October when its hotel and museum were reopened. Also opening in October and adding to the station’s foreignerfriendly character is the JR East Travel Service Center which provides visitors to Japan with travel information in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. The Service Center houses travel service counters, sightseeing information desks, foreign currency exchange booth, ATM and hand luggage handling services. After nearly five years of work, Tokyo Station has metamorphosed into an attractive and welcoming terminal which fuses historic and modern aspects to serve as a fitting portal to Japan for travelers from abroad.
