Sales of Kirin Mets Cola, a carbonated beverage produced by Kirin Holdings group company Kirin Beverage, have far exceeded expectations. The company launched the 480 ml bottle product on April 24, 2012, initially looking for first-year sales of a million cases. But sales broke through that target just two weeks after the launch and the company has upwardly revised its annual sales target to seven million cases.
Development began in 2007 with the aim of creating a beverage which would earn the Japanese Consumer Affairs Agency’s FOSHU¹ approval. It targeted the cola sector because cola drinks are the drink of choice with high-fat foods such as pizzas or hamburgers. The idea was to demonstrate a FOSHU drink containing indigestible dextrin which would be effective in suppressing increases in blood neutral fat levels. During development, obtaining the ideal balance between sweeteners and flavoring required much trial and error. Finally, in October 2011, Kirin Mets Cola was given official FOSHU approval and could well help those who eat a lot of high-fat foods or who worry about neutral fat levels in their blood.
