Mitsubishi Auto Leasing Corporation provides a telemetric service which utilizes an image-recording drive recorder (DR) to capture scenes of dangerous situations as well as to record speed, trip distance, time, position and other driving data. The DR/video camera unit is mounted at the top of the windshield in sales representative cars, trucks and other commercial vehicles. The camera shoots the scene in front of the vehicle as long as the engine is running. With an inbuilt G-sensor, the DR starts recording camera footage when the driver applies the brakes suddenly or in other situations it judges to be dangerous. The DR also uses an in-built GPS system to record a trip and track log. The data is saved to a memory card, allowing the fleet operator to use a computer and see how the vehicle has been operated.
The service is not confined to the delivery of raw data as staff will regularly visit the customer and, on the basis of recorded data, give advice on how to reduce accidents and to improve operational management. Any reduction in accidents is reflected in lower insurance premiums, while the collective management of data helps reduce fleet fuel consumption and service costs, so the system can be a major benefit in commercial vehicle management.
Operational data, images included, is recorded to a memory card fitted to the DR. The display at the bottom left of the screen gives detailed information on how the vehicle has been operated, including vehicle speed, inter-vehicular distance, acceleration and deceleration and brake use frequency.
