The Athens of the North

The Old Town in Edinburgh, a city known as The Athens of the North. Top right, Arthur’s Seat reaches for the sky.
Edinburgh has some similarities with Kobe, which I lived in during the late 1990s. Like Kobe, Edinburgh is bounded by the sea on one side and hills on the other. Edinburgh is also very cosmopolitan, with lots of historical sights and an arts festival that attracts thousands of tourists each year. Unfortunately, being on a similar latitude to Moscow, it is a good bit colder.

Among the most prominent features are Arthur’s Seatーa long extinct volcano, Edinburgh Castle and the New Town, which isn’t very new anymore, having been built about 150 years ago. With so many places for tourists to visit, it is sometimes referred to as the Athens of the North.
As Edinburgh is quite smallーit's only about one-third the size of Kobeーmany people walk to work or have very short commutes. Currently we have 3 members of staff from Mitsubishi UFJ Trust & Banking in Tokyo on secondment. Each usually spends around 3 years with us, learning about how we invest. The Joint Venture is directly supported by a team of 5 from Baillie Gifford, including Kenichi Komiya who was the original secondee from Toyo Trust over 30 years ago!
Close to the office is Arthur’s Seat, one of a number of large green spaces in Edinburgh. This makes it a popular place for a walk, run or cycle. The circumference is not dissimilar to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo and with lots of competitive people, the fastest lunch lap time is keenly contested by employees.

Overlooking Edinburgh is the Dugald Stewart Memorial on Carlton Hill at the top of the Royal Mile.
The Castle at the top of Royal Mile, Edinburgh’s historical “Old Town," is also nearby and has superb views over the city. At the bottom of the Royal Mile is Holyrood Palace, the Queen’s residence in Edinburgh when she comes to visit.
In the “New Town,” one of the interesting things to do is look out for the signs, statues and plaques, marking where prominent people were born or lived. Search for the likes of Alexander Graham Bell (the inventor of the telephone), John Napier (who gave us logarithms) or Arthur Conan Doyle (the author of the Sherlock Holmes novels) to learn about the contribution Scots have made to the world.

Office and Job Description

PSM Indonesia always tries to expand cooperation with the best companies in Indonesia which can have a big influence on the development of PSM Indonesia in the future. At PSM Indonesia, I work as a secretary in charge of handling administration, finance, human resources and legal documents. I have learnt a lot of new things from every job assignment that I do. Experiences that I went through on my job allow me to develop my knowledge to communicate well to negotiate in many ways and to find ways to solve problems. I always keep reminding myself to be grateful at all times and try to keep my complaints to a minimum since complaining does not solve any problem. We must do our task and find solutions to the problems. All in all, this work has a positive impact for me.

Family Life and Hobby

We spend our leisure time outdoors and mostly near the mountains.
I live with my husband. He works for a large packaging company, which belongs to the big corporate group in Indonesia. We live in a small house, very quiet and far from the main road and my workplace.

We like our house because we still feel fresh air in the morning. We usually take a vacation when we return to our hometown or during a long holiday. Our hometown is just near the mountains; we usually go up to the mountains by motorcycle to relax and refresh. We also enjoy looking at the beautiful views during the ride. During weekends, we usually visit our family or do some gardening as one of our hobbies. We usually grow ornamental plants and some vegetables in our backyard. My life may be the same as that of others, nothing special or particularly interesting, but I always try to be grateful for every day that I live and for what I have. Do it and be grateful.
